White City - DZ1
Designated for a new student space on the Imperial College White City campus this project will become the focal point for the wider masterplan by connecting campuses on the North and South of the existing Westway flyover, below which the proposed building is to be constructed.
The site presents a significant constraint to the development, located as it is beneath the A40 Westway structure the height of the building is severely limited allowing for a maximum 2 storey development, reducing to one storey in places. The proximity to the Westway has also meant a detailed analysis of the potential ground movements associated with the development and in-depth liaising with third party asset holders.
Structurally the proposal is to create a fully open, flexible and adaptable space. The proposed structural strategy is for a full timber portal frame with stability provided fully through the portal frame action in both directions. To maximise the headroom within the space services the timber beams will be notched gaining additional space and adding to a lighter feel for the building. Cross laminated timber (CLT) floor decks will be used throughout.
A key aim of the project was to deliver on Imperial College's ambitious sustainability targets which meant a preference from the start for timber construction. The option of utilising reclaimed steel was also considered during the early stages.
