Swindon Carriage Works
The Carriage Works in Swindon is a series of Grade II listed warehouse unit structures collectively known as the West Shed which was constructed in 1876 during the expansion of the Great Western railway.
Areas of the structure, in particular the masonry jack arch upper ground floor, were in poor condition suffering from degradation, poor workmanship and settlement and so refurbishing the units to create open flexible workspaces with new mezzanine floors has proved a challenge.
Given the budgetary and heritage requirements imposed, it was essential to retain as much of the existing structure as possible and so targeted investigations and surveys have proved critical in assessing which areas of structure can be repaired and which need to be replaced.
